As Class Valedictorian and with all your multitude of activities at MHS, you made us proud and successful !  Thanks for all the memories.  You will be missed but I know you will be with us in spirit.

George indeed made us all proud  to be a part of the Stingaree family.  He was smart, made a great spokesman for all of our class.  I think 1966 was the best year ever and he helped in many ways to make it a memorable year for all of us.

Dr. George Demosthenes Mekras Obituary

MEKRAS, DR. GEORGE DEMOSTHENES, 65, of Coral Gables, FL and Orchid, FL passed away unexpectedly March 18th surrounded by his loving family. Survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Satira, sons Demosthenes (Lourdes), Peter (Cristina) and John (Jimena) Mekras, grandchildren G. Nicholas, Eleni, Samantha and George Mekras, sister Evangeline (John) Scurtis, brother Dr. John (Pamela) Mekras, sister-in-law Eleni (Reider) Hoff and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, V. Rev. Demosthenes and Presbytera Toula Mekras, in-laws Peter and Mary Karter, and brother-in-law Alec Karter. Native Miamian, retired urologic surgeon, co-founder of Miami Urologic Institute, S. Miami, FL, and entrepreneur. A scholar athlete at Miami Senior High School, earned a BA in Biology from Harvard University and MD degree from University of Miami School of Medicine. Member and past president of the Dr. John T. MacDonald Foundation, founding board member of Coral Gables Trust, member of UM Business Mentor Program, National Chairman of Orthodox Christian Network, Vice Mayor of the Town of Orchid, FL, served on several hospital and church boards, member of Riviera Country Club and Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club. Avid golfer and nature lover who cherished traveling with his wife, family and friends. George was an honorable man with a brilliant mind whose family mourns their profound loss. May his memory be eternal. Viewing will be held on Thursday, March 20th from 5 to 8 pm with trisagion prayer services at 7 pm at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2401 SW 3 Ave, Miami with funeral services on Friday, March 21 at 10 am. Interment Woodlawn Park Cemetery North. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral "Mekras Memorial Fund," 244 SW 24th Road, Miami, FL 33129; Orthodox Christian Network, PO Box 4690, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33338 and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2525 S. 25th Street, Ft. Pierce, FL 34981.
